They found the design clean, but needing more polish and sparkle. Neither are serious chess players, so it's doubtful that they'd use or buy this product.
Not so much because it's a great interface, but because it follows the conventions they're used to from other online games. Overall they found the user interface usable.

Both speak English fluently, and use computers and the internet quite a bit. One of them was a male Grad Student from the Netherlands, and one was a female high-school student. I showed my design and mockups to two people who are not in computer science. In the Game menu, the Play item is grayed out if you're not logged in, and the Resign and Forfeit items are grayed out unless you're playing a game. The Register item is grayed out if you're logged in, and the Preferences item is grayed out if you're logged out. In the WorldChess menu, the Login/Logout menu item changes its name & behavior depending on if you're logged in or logged out.
Gameplay-specific options are found in the Game menu, and then there's also the Help menu. Most actions are done from the WorldChess menu. The chessboard in the gameplay screen is taken from Yahoo! Games. The rest of the mockups were done using Apple's Interface Builder. The main page mockups were done using Microsoft Word and GraphicConverter. Thus, there is no need to provide a seperate mechanism to get back to the main page (for example, from the standings screen). All of the other screens appear in new popped-up windows. This is why those mockups don't have a window border around them. The "main page" is what the user would navigate to in their web browser. (For example, at the login screen, if the user clicks on the cancel button, they'll be taken back to the not-logged-in main screen.) Screenshots Also not shown is the effects of the cancel buttons. When the user dismisses the dialog box, it closes itself as well as the gameplay window, bringing the user back to the "main page" window.

When a game ends, one of those windows pops up. Not shown in this statechart is the "forfeit confirmation" and "game over" screens. (Playing a game and preferences are only available to a user who is logged in, and logging in and registering are only available to a user who isn't logged in.) From there, all the other actions are available. The user is initially presented with a main page, which differs depending on whether or not they are logged in. Users can also look at their standings, or observe a game in progress. Users can play games against each other, with a global scoreboard keeping track of rankings. Once you've saved any changes, the next image in the sequence is automatically opened, giving you the opportunity to edit a large number of pictures and quickly edit the basic settings.I chose to do a Chess game, named WorldChess. The Express Picture Enhancement feature allows you to adjust the brightness and contrast of your pictures with a simple click.
